Sustainability

We love Tanzania’s natural beauty and we are passionate about keeping it healthy and thriving for generations to come.

That is why all of our tours have an underlying focus on sustainability. We plan our itineraries to minimize the impact on the environment and partner with accommodations that share the same values.

Here are a few ways for safari with Legacy Exchange Outfitters makes a sustainable difference:

Reforest After Climbing

Plant trees after Kilimanjaro treks

After each and every Kilimanjaro trek, our climbing team plants a tree at a local school In the foothill of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The impact of planting trees at schools is 5-fold:

  • Improving the environment and halting soil erosion
  • Teaching the next generation about the importance of healthy forests
  • The fruit trees are cared for by the school children, so they have a much higher chance of success
  • It provides an opportunity for travelers to participate in an activity that has a long-term impact in Tanzania and directly helps the community
  • We usually plant fruit trees, Which will be beneficial for the next generation.
Eliminate Needless Waste

Reduce unnecessary waste

We strive to reduce unnecessary waste by being intentional about all aspects of our safaris:

  • Avoiding single-use plastics as much as possible
  • Using sustainable, local materials (like artesian baskets, locally-made seat covers and more)
  • Going paperless, when appropriate
  • Offering reusable items for lunch boxes and when camping
  • Planning our safari itineraries to be ‘smart’ about fuel usage and encourage walking safaris, treks, and cycling adventures which get clients in nature as much as possible
Eyasi Cleanup Mission

Eyasi clean-up + recycling

Unfortunately, not everyone respects the environment even in a place as beautiful as Tanzania. This can be noted by plastic bottles tossed aside the highways, littering the beautiful landscape.
In 2023, we found an area of Lake Eyasi especially affected by plastic litter. This remote location has no waste-disposal approaches, so we took it upon ourselves to send in a local clean-up team to collect the waste and send it to a program in Arusha that recycles plastic bottles into waterproof building materials – a win-win for the environment!

Ongoing, we have established waste-collection bins (made from repurposed materials) to reduce litter. We regularly pick up the collected waste to send for recycling.

These are just a few of the examples of what we are doing to help keep Tanzania beautiful.

Legacy Exchange Outfitters offers more than just a vacation. Eugene and his team work hard to provide their guests with a remarkable experience. However, sightseeing wild animals in their natural habitat is only part of the adventure.
