Island Fun

A selection of the most exciting, romantic or interesting add-on activities you can do in Zanzibar, Pemba or Mafia Islands.

Tanzania's Islands

Tanzania’s Island Archipelagos are situated in the Indian Ocean and offer remarkable marine parks, incredible sea life sightings, and interesting cultural excursions.

Technically, Zanzibar is composed of both Pemba and Unguja Islands, but Unguja is more popularly known simply as “Zanzibar”.

Island Fun Activities - Zanzibar

Off the coast of Kizimkazi, in south eastern Unguja, is a favorite spot of bottle nose dolphins, who circuit the waters on a regular basis.

Guests have the chance to observe them from within a boat, or, for those brave enough, jump into the water as a pod of these incredible marine animals swim past.

You will not be allowed to touch or interact with the dolphins, as per our commitment to animal welfare, but you can share the ocean waters with these beautiful, gentle animals in a safe and ethical boat-and-swim adventure.

The best time to spot dolphins is in the early morning.

Dhow Countries Music Academy is the only one of its kind in Zanzibar. It’s mission is to preserve, teach and perform the traditional music of the Swahili islands.

Guests can experience the legacy of traditional Swahili music first hand by touring the Music Academy, taking a music lesson, or attending a live performance in Zanzibar.

A favorite activity for incredible photos or romantic memories: ride horses on the beach in Zanzibar.

You decide if it’s a morning or sunset ride, but either way, this experience is sure to be a memorable one as you canter over the smooth sand on the back of a gentle, well-trained horse.

Any visit to “The Spice Island” would be incomplete without an educational and interesting spice tour. Visit a local spice farm and see, feel and taste the various spices that Zanzibar is famous for, including cloves, nutmeg, black pepper, cardamom and more. Each of our half-day Spice Tours include a local lunch using the very spices you experienced during your tour.

For a fun-filled day, visit Mnemba Atoll with a private boat tour. You will enjoy snorkeling over vibrant coral reefs and watching a plethora of tropical fish. When you’re tired of swimming, the boat will bring you back to shore.
Option to add a local, fresh seafood lunch after your reef tour. Zanzibar Island Beach Holiday

Ideal for creative types and art lovers, learn how to paint with a local artist in Stone Town. Fine Art, henna painting, Tinga Tinga (cartoon style) or pallet knife are just a few of the styles you can practice during a private art lesson. The best part? You get to take your work home with you!

We recommend this add-on activity for all nature lovers and conservationists.

Jozani Forest is an important habitat for the endangered, endemic Red Colobus monkey. Guests can explore on foot, wandering the nature trails or mangrove boardwalk, or opt to cycle through the forest. Either way, due to the tropical weather we suggest enjoying this excursion in the morning.

The Butterfly Center offers a look into the importance of balanced ecology. As clear-cutting and Forest destruction has threatened butterfly habitat, the center works with over 40 local Zanzibar farms to help rebuild the population of tropical butterflies once again. They do this through educational and breeding programs. A visit to this center is a great learning opportunity and a chance to support important conservation efforts, and it’s simply magical to be surrounded by butterflies, too.

Spiced oils, aromatic massages and superb facial treatments make up the traditional spa services offered throughout Zanzibar. Set aside an hour (or two) to enjoy this luxurious treatment during your beach holiday.

While fresh seafood is abundant in Zanzibar, not all restaurants offer traditional Swahili cuisine. If you want to take it up a notch, book a special chef-prepared Swahili dinner, eaten in the traditional Swahili fashion in a rooftop setting, overlooking Stone Town. With the sunset, sea breeze and delicious traditional cuisine, you will experience Zanzibar on another level.

Legacy Exchange Outfitters offers more than just a vacation. Eugene and his team work hard to provide their guests with a remarkable experience. However, sightseeing wild animals in their natural habitat is only part of the adventure.
