Adventure
For travelers who want to make memories, not just take photos. Get into nature, climb peaks, and experience the best of Tanzania, first-hand.
Adventures
Air, land or water: these are the best adventures to add to any East African Safari.
Whether you want something out of the ordinary, or quintessential East African, you’re sure to find it on this list.
All these activities are optional, but some (such as boat safaris or walking safaris) may already be included for pre-designed itineraries.
Adventures in Tanzania
We’ve separated these adventures by areas of interest: for nature lovers and bird-watching enthusiasts, those looking to get active, and travelers who want to try something different.
Adventures - Nature Lovers
We think walking safaris are the best way to experience Tanzania first-hand, and are suitable for all participants aged 16 and up. The walks are conducted at a leisurely pace, and can be adapted to suit each group’s preferences.
Walking safaris in Serengeti are best in the morning, while Arusha National Park walks could be half-day treks and include a picnic lunch at a lovely waterfall.
All walking safaris are with an armed park ranger and expert guide.
Want to get up-close to a herd of zebra? See wildebeests and elands closer than any Safari car? Try a horseback riding adventure! We offer morning or evening horse rides (best times to view these grazing animals) from the best stables in northern Tanzania.
If it’s your first time on a horse, make it the best experience ever! Rides are available to participants ages 8 and up.
For a relaxing day around Arusha, consider visiting Lake Duluti. This natural crater lake is home to many colorful bird species and massive Monitor Lizards.
Guests can enjoy a leisurely walk around the lake, following a simple, well-marked trail, or venture out on a short boat ride or canoe trip.
Other options include bike riding in the area.
Some of our tours include boat safaris (such as safaris to Nyerere National Park or Ruaha National Park). But if you’re interested in an additional boat safari, reach out!
We also offer unique boat tours at Saadani National Park, select Island parks inside Lake Victoria (such as Saanane National Park and Rubondo Island). Finally, the best way to experience Lake Tanganyika is by boat!
We always encourage activities that are outside of a typical safari car, and believe guests come away with a more enriching experience after viewing the landscape from a river or lake, too.

Adventures - Active Adventures
A perfect active addition to an Ngorongoro Crater tour. After a morning of viewing animals in the Crater, stretch your legs with this moderate (1.5-2 hrs) hike to a beautiful crater waterfall.
Option to climb to the top and rest with a stunning view, or hike the steep incline down to walk beside the falls.
See the prints of buffalo and cattle, from the wildlife and herds that pass through the westlands beside the crater falls.
Another hike to include during a tour in Ngorongoro Conservation area, or en-route to Serengeti National Park.
The floor of Empakai Crater is an alkaline lake, home to fabulous pink flamingos and other waterfowl.
The steep trek down into the crater offers a chance to spy dik-diks or other grazing animals that live in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Cycling enthusiasts can get out of the jeep and tour Arusha National Park on two wheels!
This adventure a is one-of-a-kind experience to view giraffes and zebras while you get moving.
Cycling is always fun, but cycling in a stunning national park, while viewing wildlife is what we consider epic!
Visitors can enjoy a short canoe trip during a visit to Arusha National Park.
The Momella Lakes are natural lakes found within the park, and home to flocks of pink flamingos and white egrets.
See them up close as you paddle through the waters and enjoy a peaceful afternoon.
Kilimanjaro and Meru are impressive mountains, but they are both former volcanoes that stand-alone. They also require several days for a full summit. For travelers tight on time, or looking to experience a mountain range, there are other exciting treks in Tanzania, such as the Usambara Mountains.
See the lush forests and experience the Sambaa culture with a visit to Lushoto. Treks pass through forests, active dairy farms and visit waterfalls, too.
We think this adventure is best paired with the conservation add-ons that include Mkomazi National Park, for a unique custom-designed tour of a lesser-visited part of Tanzania.
Adventures - Once-in-a-Lifetime
Hot Air Balloon Safaris might just be the most romantic (and exciting!) way to view Northern Tanzania.
All Balloon Rides depart early in the morning for a fantastic sunrise experience you will remember forever.
Hot Air Balloon rides are available in select areas of the Serengeti and Tarangire, but must be booked in advance. Please reach out to learn how to include this once-in-a-lifetime adventure to your Tanzanian tour.
For those seeking a special kind of adrenaline rush, consider taking a night drive.
While it is always exciting to view big cats such as lions and leopards, these predators are more active after dark. And there is a special thrill you experience when you hear that lion roar, or see a leopard’s shining eyes during a late-night drive.
Special permits are required, and arrangements must be made in advance to include this exciting add-on activity. So reach out to learn more.
An excellent add-on for tours to Ngorongoro Crater or the larger conservation area.
Camping overnight on the Crater Rim allows guests to experience the beauty of the world’s largest, intact volcanic caldera that most tourists miss: sunset hours, the stunning night sky, and a spectacular dawn, too.

There are few places in the world where visitors can walk amongst wild chimpanzees, in their natural habitat.
Western Tanzania is a magical place, and Gombe Stream National Park can only be accessed by boat. Once you’ve taken this adventure, you will have a new appreciation for primates, and the scientists who study them.
This experience is inspired by Jane Goodall’s ground-breaking research methods and adheres to ethical animal guidelines.
If you’ve ever wanted to trek in the jungle, try chimp trekking with Legacy Exchange Outfitters.

Our Reviews
Legacy Exchange Outfitters offers more than just a vacation. Eugene and his team work hard to provide their guests with a remarkable experience. However, sightseeing wild animals in their natural habitat is only part of the adventure.
