4 Day Mount Meru Trek
Conquer Africa’s highest peak on Kilimanjaro’s most scenic route
4 Day Mount Meru Trek Overview
The “4 Days Mount Meru Trek” is a four-day adventure that takes you up Tanzania’s second-highest peak, Mount Meru, located in Arusha National Park. This trek lets you walk through a beautiful rainforest where you might see monkeys, birds, and even buffalo. As you go higher, the scenery changes to alpine forests and open moorlands.
You’ll start your hike at the Fig Tree Arch and make your way up to different huts each night. The climb gets tougher as you near the peak, but reaching the top in time to see the sunrise is incredibly rewarding. On the way down, you can relax a bit more and enjoy the natural beauty around you. At the end of the trek, you’ll get a certificate to celebrate your achievement. This trek is perfect for anyone who loves nature and is up for a good challenge.
4 Day Mount Meru Trek Itinerary
The trek begins within Arusha National Park and covers approximately 14 kilometers on the first day. You will pass through the impressive Fig Tree Arch and trek in the rainforest. You will likely see wildlife, including various monkeys, birds, and possibly even buffalo or dik-diks in the forest.
Meals included: Dinner
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, your team will continue the climb, crossing over alpine forests and moorland. You are still likely to see beautiful birds as you trek to Saddle Hut (6 km). After a hot lunch, continue with a short acclimatization trek to Little Meru Point (approx 1 hr hike). After dinner, try to rest because the summit hike begins around 12 midnight or 1 am.
You will wake in the early hours of the morning and begin trekking in the dark toward the summit. After passing Rhino Point (where real Rhinoceros bones are found, even at this incredible altitude), continue over the Crater Rim. You should reach Socialist Peak at sunrise.
It is the summit climb that many find to be the most difficult, and we recommend the use of trekking poles, especially for moving through the thick ash at the crater rim and over the steep rock face toward the very top.
After celebrating at at the summit, signing the book and taking mandatory photos, it is time to trek back to Saddle Hut. There, enjoy a filling brunch and respite before continuing to Miriakamba Hut.
If you have chosen the three day itinerary for your Mount Meru climb, you will not stop at Miriakamba Hut, but continue straight out of the park.
- Elevation : 11,712 ft (3570 m) to 14,980 ft (4565 m) then down to 8250 ft (2541 m)
- Distance : 4 miles / 6 km ascent and 7 miles /12 km descent
- Approx : 6-7 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
- Hike Through: Alpine Desert
With the four day trek option, this final day is more relaxing, with a leisurely breakfast and chance to walk to the Tululusia Waterfall as you head out of the park. This allows for a ‘walking safari’ across the swampy areas of Arusha National Park were guests often observe giraffes or buffalos from a safe distance.
You will receive your climb certificates before departing Arusha National Park.
all of this I have added, because I think the itinerary as shown with the other treks is great, Mt Meru should have one, too.

Our Reviews
Legacy Exchange Outfitters offers more than just a vacation. Eugene and his team work hard to provide their guests with a remarkable experience. However, sightseeing wild animals in their natural habitat is only part of the adventure.
